2. Recording
1. How do I proceed in order to save record files on another hard drive or in another directory?

If you would like to change for an existing recording the place of destination of new recording files, then open that recording and select the button . Select the new directory within the dialog box Document properties Record. In case you want to change the directory for all recordings, select the command Management/Options. Select the basic directory for new recording files within the Record options.

2. How do I make room on the drive for new video recordings?

You have the option to delete video files of older recordings without losing the recordings, all kinds of analysis and editing. utilius® vs may restore the video files automatically if the corresponding video tapes are still available, which once served as source of the files.
Before deleting, it is also possible to extract particular scenes into an edit decision list and to save them in a separate file in order to continue displaying these scenes. The respective procedures are described in your Online help in section Delete records.

3. Analysis
1. How do I select a category system for the classification of scenes?

When creating a new analysis, you can select a category system in the dialog box New analysis.
The category system for an analysis can be changed at any time. For it, select a new category system in the document properties of the analysis. Document properties In the video view can be shown with the button or in the dialog box Open document using the command Properties. If you wish to extend a category system or to set up a new one, select the command Management/Category system.

Further information can be found in section Record scenes in your Online help.

4. Is it possible to follow up my analysis data also in other programs?

Yes, it is. Using the command “Export cutting list”, you save the information of the cutting list in tabular form within a file. You can specify in a control, which fields are to be exported. You can export features of the category system, recorded times and file names in different file formats (text file for follow up in Microsoft Excel, HTML file for displaying or printing in the Internet browser).

The procedure is as follows: Click with the right mouse button into the scene list of your video cut, and then with the left mouse button in the context menu on “Export cutting list”. The assistant is started. Select as a first step the columns of the table and their order. Then, as a second step, the result table is shown in the preview.  After that, the export file name and file format are determined. In case you wish to follow up on your analysis data in Microsoft Excel, select the file type “csv” and the format “text file, separated by semicolon”. As a final step you may look at the result or switch to the export directory and close the assistant.

4. Playing back
1. How do I play back video sequences on the recorder?

First create an edit decision list from a list of video scenes that are to be analyzed. The easiest case would be to select the button in the video view of an analysis that is already open. The created edit decision list can be written on the recorder by selecting the output "Recorder" and pressing .
Further options are described in your Online help in section Output on recorder.

2. How do I play back video sequences at the end of a partly recorded tape?

Prepare the output of the edit decision list of a video on the recorder (see above). Before starting the output, put the videotape into the recorder. Select the setting "Playing back from recorder" in the left side of the video view. Using the buttons for the recorder control, e.g. fast-forward , you can now search for the end of the tape recording.
When playing fast-forward utilius® vs will stop the recorder at the end of the videotape. However, you need to rewind by pressing in order to stop the recorder exactly at the end of the tape recording. The tape should not contain unrecorded gaps. As regards new DV tapes (without recordings), the time code for the following recording starts again with 00:00:00.00 after unrecorded tape sections. These kinds of recordings cannot be processed reliably with utilius® vs any longer (e.g. for anew recordings) since the timecode is no longer clear.
Having found the tape position put the recorder on pause or stop and start the output with .

3. The video pauses or judders at times when recording a cutting list on the recorder. How do I get the scenes to run smoothly?

Generally, longer edit decision lists cannot be played without interruption, since – due to considerable memory requirements – a continuously smooth playing of the edit decision list cannot take place.
Therefore an edit decision list is played back scene after scene by default. The recording is paused between the scenes, the next scene is prepared and the recording is continued after a lead-time.
However, the number of scenes to be played in succession (record in blocks) can be set in the user settings Recorder (command Management/Options). Reduce the value or select the default "1 sequence".

The output of an edit decision list requires considerable memory capacity. Please close all other applications during that time. Thus, when playing the list, it is ensured that Windows does not need to gain free memory by swapping-out on the hard drive. Accessing the hard drive may slow down the fast loading of video data for a continuous playing. In addition, other hard drive activities should not be started (e.g. starting another application). If possible, do not work with your PC for the time of the output.

Further information can be found in your Online help in section Record on recorder.

4. The video is too slow when recording a cutting list on the recorder. How do I play scenes at normal speed?

The video file(s) are probably not on hand in DV format. The files were e.g. compressed to a different format during the output of the edit decision list or files with a different video format were imported. When playing, the data have first to be compressed again; it takes time and cannot be performed on most PCs within the required output time. For that reason, a file with an edit decision list has to be created in DV format before playing.

Proceed this way: Create a new file in saving the edit decision list to a file. For the output on a DV camcorder, make sure to set the compressing format "DV Video Encoder" in the output options. Having created the file, its output on the recorder may be carried out. For it, select the output type "Recorder" and the default "Output file" in the Output options. It is also possible to tick off both output options right from the beginning: file and recorder.

5. How do I create a compressed video file?

First create an editing decision list from a list of video scenes that are to be analyzed. The easiest is to select the button in the video view of an open analysis. The created edit decision list can be saved to a file by selecting output "File", a name and pressing . In order to set the compression format, select a suitable compression format in the dialog box Output options before saving.

Please note: If an error message is displayed when starting the saving, you might not use the selected compression format. In this case select a different one.
